You are Never Too Old to Create Art By Kris Curran
Share
It’s one of the most common myths I hear—“I wish I had started sooner” or “It’s too late for me to try something like that.” But the truth is, you are never too old to create art.
I say that not just as an artist, but as someone who had to reinvent my life and rediscover creativity after a major life change. After working as a tattoo artist for over 16 years, a complication from eye surgery left me blind in my left eye. That experience forced me to retire from a career I loved. It was heartbreaking—but it wasn’t the end. In many ways, it was a new beginning.
Creativity Has No Expiry Date
Art doesn’t care how old you are. It doesn’t ask what your resume looks like, what school you went to, or what career path you took. Whether you're 8 or 80, if you have the desire to draw, paint, sketch, or color—you’re already an artist. Creativity lives inside us at every stage of life. You just have to give yourself permission to tap into it.
Starting Over Isn’t Failing
When I picked up my pens and paints again—this time, to create the animal and pet wall art I now sell at Curran Artworks—I was starting from a new place. My vision was different, my technique had evolved, and I had to learn how to work around a physical limitation. But instead of letting it stop me, I let it shape my style. It’s never too late to start, and it’s always okay to start again.
Art as a Lifelong Companion
For many people, art becomes even more meaningful with age. It’s a powerful way to express your experiences, tell your story, and connect with others. Whether you’re drawing for yourself or sharing your work with the world, the joy of creating can bring healing, confidence, and purpose at any stage of life.
Inspiration is Everywhere—Especially in You
Some of my favorite pieces were born from memories, stories, and emotions that came later in life. Animals I’ve encountered, people I’ve loved, or moments I needed to process—all of it ends up on the page in some way. The longer we live, the more inspiration we carry inside us. Art gives us the tools to bring it out.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve ever thought “I’d love to try art, but I’m too old,” I hope this blog changes your mind. The world needs your perspective. The beauty of art is that there are no rules, no deadlines, and no age limits. Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or returning to art after decades away—start today.
Because you're not too old.
You're right on time.
